Agriculture Fleet Tracking

GPS tracking in agriculture is a technical solution to remotely see the location of different equipment. It works by installing a GPS tracking device on a vehicle, which then regularly sends its location information using mobile data to a fleet management software. There, managers can open a map with vehicle locations displayed in real time.

In general, there are two ways to track farm equipment – using a GPS tracking device, which is commonly used for motor vehicles, or a Bluetooth low-energy asset tracker.

A GPS tracking device is larger, more expensive, and requires a power source in the long-term, such as a car battery. However, it can independently send location data and often supports additional features, such as detecting harsh driving events.

A Bluetooth low-energy (BLE) tracker is rather inexpensive, very small, and easy to conceal. It can work for long periods without connecting to an external power source. To provide location data, it sends a signal to a nearby supported GPS tracking device.

Both kinds of devices require a specific agriculture fleet management software to send location data to, such as the Mapon platform. Managers can then use it to access the information in a practically usable way, such as via a live map.

Mapon recommends installing GPS tracking devices on motor vehicles, such as tractors or combine harvesters, and using smaller BLE trackers on different attachments and equipment, like ploughs, trailers, and rear blades. This way, you can ensure the safety of every valuable asset in your company.
